I’m officially fed up with the smartphone wars. No, not the eternal battle between iPhone and Android and Windows and what not, but the sudden trend to make smartphones that are as big as your face.
I’ve been using and reviewing fairly average-sized smartphones over the years, but I’ve noticed that recently smartphone screens have become bigger and bigger, to the point where it’s just plain ridiculous. Last week I reviewed the Lenovo K900, a fairly competent Android smartphone, with a 5.5″ screen. My then smartphone, the BlackBerry Z10, was dwarfed by comparison, and while the extra screen real estate on the K900 made browsing the web and watching multimedia a lot nicer, it was still at the end of the day a ridiculously large phone.
Today I’m faced with an even bigger dilemma in the form of the Huawei Ascend Mate. This 6.1″ phone is a beast of a device, and while I’m sure it’s a great device I am slightly dreading reviewing it, because it means that I’ll be holding a 6.1″ device against my face when making phone calls. There’s just something abnormal about using a device that big – I’m just 1″ shy of slapping a 7″ tablet to my cheek and calling it even. I remember when I got my hands on the original Samsung Galaxy Tab – it was a fairly competent Android tablet for the time, but I just had to use a headset with that thing. There was no way that you would catch me holding a device that big to make a phone call.
Do you know what would be great? If they started making phones smaller. Please, someone bring this back in fashion:
So I’m begging you – please stop making phones any bigger – my face can’t take the extra embarrassment.
