We previously looked at a gaming monitor from Eizo in the form of the FS2333. While not the most attractive monitor we’ve tested, it still held its own and scored rather well in our review. The next one in the lineup is the Eizo Foris FG2421, which Eizo says is their best gaming monitor yet.
From a design point of view, the FG2421 looks pretty much the same as the FS2333. The FG2421 attempts to sport a ‘gaming’ look with a large backlit ‘Eizo’ logo at the back, framed by a bright orange border that can double as a carry handle.
Around the front at the bottom of the screen are various buttons to access the OSD and change the various settings of the monitor. You also have two USB ports at the side, and HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort connections at the back. Overall the build quality is very sturdy, and the FG2421’s base provides a decent amount of adjustment for an optimal viewing angle.
The FG2421 comes with three preset modes, which quickly let you get up and running with the monitor. You can only change a few settings in either of these modes, so if you want to really use this monitor to the best of its ability, you’re going to want to invest some time and switch to one of the User presets. Here you can tweak almost any option of the monitor to your liking – I found that I had to spend about twenty minutes adjusting everything until both brightness and colors were satisfactory.
What’s special about the FG2421 is that it supports a 120Hz refresh rate. This means that you can get almost butter-smooth performance when running games that hit over 100fps. To really kick things up a notch, you can activate the monitor’s ‘Turbo 240’ mode which aims to even further reduce motion blur. To be honest, turning this mode off and on I didn’t notice too much of a difference in gameplay, since the monitor’s 120Hz refresh rate is already so high. Input lag is also greatly reduced here as seen in previous gaming monitor models, making the FG2421 a perfect addition to any gaming tournament, regardless of platform.
The Eizo Foris FG2421 is certainly an excellent and very capable gaming monitor. Though you’ll need a pretty serious PC in order to see very high framerates that would benefit from the 120Hz refresh rate, you still get a A-class monitor that is prefect for any kind of gaming, with a wealth of customizable settings to ensure you’re getting the very best picture quality. While it may take some time to properly calibrate, the FG2421 is certainly a reliable gaming monitor that any enthusiast should take a serious look at. The only question you need to be asking yourself is whether or not you would pay the AED 2,710 price tag for it.
