Lets face it- we all love to doodle. Grabbing a piece of paper and drawing random, little things is a good past time for most of us. But what it you could turn your doodles into actual objects? That’s exactly what the team at 3Doodler have in mind with their $99 handheld 3D printing pen. Raising over $2.3 million on Kickstarter, which made 3Doodler one of the most successful Kickstarter projects of all time, you can tell that a lot of people found this experiment very fascinating. The 3Doodler team was present at the ShowStoppers event in Berlin and I managed to get a little demo of how the product works.
It’s quite bizarre to see your doodle just snap off the paper and into your hands. Not only can I see this being used by my daughters over and over but it is something that I can see myself spending hours with. There is something magical about the transformation of what you have just drawn on paper into a physical object in your hands. It’s a great way to introduce 3D printing into a common household and I think the guys at 3Doodle have gotten the price right as well.
This is a first-gen product so there is certainly some areas where the 3Doodler team can improve their product. For example, it is still a rather large product and requires to be plugged into electric at all times. I’m sure that as technology matures, the 3Doodler will get smaller and lighter, and, hopefully consume lesser power so it could house a rechargeable battery. I would also like to see multiple colours go in at the same time and through some kind of switch, select the colour that would like to doodle in.
The initial batch of investors at Kickstarter are set to receive their toy this month while refills are already available. You can pre-order one for yourself from 3Doodler’s website although with the current backlog, don’t expect your new toy to arrive until February of next year.
