Microsoft announced the new Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro tablets last night- a follow up to the pair of Windows 8 tablets that failed to ignite Microsoft’s tablet business. The new update tries to solve some of the issues with the older generation. The Surface 2 is supposedly lighter, comes with a 1080p full-HD panel and is powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor. The Pro version will be based on Intel’s Haswell processor and will come in 4GB or 8GB RAM variants. Supposedly, battery life is tremendously improved on the Pro white Surface 2 is also better in that department.
Microsoft has also updated the accessories offered with the Surface models. The new Touch Cover 2 now has a backlight and over a thousand sensors while the Surface Music Cover replaces keys with media controls and volume sliders- definitely a very cool idea.
Surface 2 is priced at US$449 although Microsoft will continue selling the outgoing Surface RT at US349. The Pro model starts at US$899 and goes all the way up to a whopping $1799. The original pair was never officially introduced in the Middle East so we have contacted Microsoft Middle East to find out if these newer models will make it here or not. The article will be updated if we hear anything concrete.
Microsoft has posted the video for the launch event online.
