Valve today announced it will ship Steam Machines and Steam Controllers to select 300 users who participated in the recent beta programme on December 13. The selected beta testers will be notified by today, and will be awarded a special badge on their Steam Community profile to indicate that they are a beta participant. Users will also receive a number of games to test on the new machines.
Unfortunately, Valve will select beta testers from the US only citing “regulatory hurdles”.
“This was not our original plan, and it means we can’t collect beta feedback from Steam customers world-wide, which is pretty unfortunate. All things considered, we’re sure it was the right decision, because the alternative was to delay the whole beta beyond the point when we’d be able to incorporate any feedback into the 2014 products,” Valve wrote on the Steam Universe group.
The SteamOS will be made available this Friday, as well, and will be downloadable to both individual users and commercial OEMs.
Valve once again reiterated to share more information at CES in January. The company intends to start selling the Steam Machines sometime next year.
