Microsoft has officially announced the availability of Windows 8.1 for 18th October. Starting midnight New Zealand time, the update will start rolling out worldwide for consumers running Windows 8 or Windows 8 RT though the Windows Store. You will also be able to buy devices running Windows 8.1 starting that same date.
We confirmed with the Middle Eastern office of Microsoft that the update will indeed be available for users in the Middle East. In fact, Microsoft will be showcasing Windows 8.1 for the first time in the Middle East during GITEX which runs from October 20-24.
With regards to computers being available with Windows 8.1 installed during GITEX Shopper, the answer is not so clear. GITEX Shopper runs October 5-12, a good few days before Windows 8.1 is launched. Mr. Ashish Panjabi, the COO for Jacky’s Group of Companies commented:
“From what we’ve been told by various OEM partners of Microsoft is that the machines won’t be ready for Gitex Shopper. Most of the stocks that will come here for Gitex Shopper have to be shipped in the coming few days from the respective factories to distributors- considering a sea shipment can take 14-21 days and we would need stocks at least a 5-7 days before Gitex Shoppers start on 5th Oct.
But we did see Microsoft jump through several hoops to make Windows 7 appear here a few days before the official launch for Gitex Shopper a few years ago but I’ve not heard of the same this time.”
